Day 37, Feb 11 2016
Big day of ascent and glorious weather.
We started the day with a 5km ascent up to 1600 metres on the Sankt Pal glacier. This was an intricate route that went round numerous knolls and mini cols.We were rewarded with a glorious decent in 6" of new powder snow, with the sleds just following our skis and not capsizing.A beautiful sunlit valley followed, and it is amazing to be the only ones here creating virgin tracks. Another steep ascent ensued, which Hilary led all the way to the top. Again rewarded by a lovely descent. After a few more kms and passing numerous animal tracks (hare, fox etc), we came across fresh skidoo tracks which we followed for 6km. What a difference it made to how the skis glide. We arrived at the tiny cabin at 1700 after doing 27 km in 9 hours.Although the stove was temperamental, we finally got it roaring and within an hour we were toasty warm , after what had been a chilly day at -14C.We feel incredibly privileged today to enjoy such amazing scenery.
